Webinar

Intelligence in Fighting Waste Crime: Use of Open and Closed Sources
On: 23 May 2017
At: 10am (BST) 11am (CEST)
In this webinar two presentations are given about intelligence and the use of open and closed sources. The first, presented by Christopher Smith, National Intelligence Manager at the Environment Agency (UK), is about the role of intelligence-led enforcement in tackling waste crime and the use of closed sources. The Environment Agency has adopted the National Intelligence Model in detecting and preventing environmental crime. This model looks at the big picture and make informed decisions as to how waste crime can be detected and prevented.
The second presentation is about a method to gather intelligence from eligible open source data, such as e-commerce platforms, on the illegal trade of waste. This method has been developed by GRID-Arendal through its Environmental Crime Programme, and in collaboration with external partners. Ieva Rucevska and Levi Westerveld will present how web scrapping tools can be utilized to generate rich databases. They will present two case studies for which this method has been applied: one focusing on the trade of used e-waste items, and the other on plastic scrap trade. The webinar also includes a discussion on how the data generated has been further analysed and used.
